Spanish viticulture traditions and female roles in wine history
In Alcalá del Júcar, the CRA Ribera del Júcar school has implemented an educational program to teach primary students about the traditional grape harvest and must production. As part of the ‘Guardians of the Middle Ages’ project, students engaged in hands-on activities including the traditional treading of grapes and sensory tastings of white and red must. The initiative, led by director Luisa Pérez Mora, aimed to connect students with local customs through practical experience.
In Jerez de la Frontera, historical research is highlighting the essential role women have played in the viticulture sector. While much of the historical documentation regarding female workers in vineyards and wineries is scarce, historian Lola Lozano Salado has identified over fifty women linked to the wine industry, particularly during the 19th century. This work seeks to recover the memory of female laborers who contributed significantly to the region's internationally recognized wine traditions through demanding agricultural work and winery roles.
