Spanish agriculture faces import competition and climate challenges
The Spanish agricultural sector is experiencing diverse trends in 2026. Table grape consumption in Spain rose by 14.7% in 2025, reaching 113,143 tons, driven by year-round availability and its popularity as a snack.
However, other sectors face significant challenges. Imports of watermelon from non-EU countries into the European Union increased by 15% in the first half of 2026, with Morocco leading at 148,950 tons and Brazil seeing a 39.4% increase. This influx is saturating the market and driving down prices for Spanish producers. Similarly, Senegal has increased its watermelon exports to the EU by 24.9%.
In the vegetable sector, Spanish zucchini dominates the EU market with a 67.94% share, despite a slight drop in total volume. Conversely, onion production in Lleida, Spain, has fallen by 30% due to extreme heat and high ultraviolet radiation, which causes plant damage and micro-wounds.
Regarding exports, Spanish fruit and vegetable sales to Germany grew by 0.9% in volume and 6.3% in value during the first half of 2026, maintaining Germany's position as the top destination for Spanish produce.
