Almería wildfire investigation questioned after human remains found in burned car

The family of a British couple killed in the Almería wildfires has reported serious investigative failings by Spanish authorities. Danielle Gillam-Kirton, the daughter of Pete and Fran Gillam, discovered human remains and personal belongings inside her parents' burned vehicle in a Mojácar police depot, despite previous assurances from police that the car had been “thoroughly inspected” and contained nothing.

Upon searching the vehicle, Gillam-Kirton and her partner found what appeared to be human bones, including a hip bone, alongside mobile phones, keys, jewelry, and cash. This discovery has raised urgent questions regarding the authenticity of the remains previously cremated, with Gillam-Kirton asking, “who or what did we cremate?”

The family and other bereaved relatives are now demanding a transparent and exhaustive investigation. They are calling for an audit of the emergency response, including the effectiveness of evacuation notices, warning systems, and the conduct of forensic teams following the July fires that killed 14 people in the region.
