Spanish wine industry sees growth in white varieties

The Spanish wine sector is experiencing a significant shift toward white varieties, particularly in the Valdeorras region. In Valdeorras, the production area for Godello grapes has nearly doubled over the last decade, growing from approximately 361 hectares in 2016 to over 712 hectares in the current campaign. This expansion comes as red wine consumption declines in favor of white wines, a trend driven by changing consumer habits and global market shifts.

In the Rías Baixas region, Bodegas Terras Gauda has launched “Proyecto A Garda,” an initiative focused on the long-term evolution and complexity of white wines. The project debuts with O Segredo 2021, an exclusive wine made solely from the Caíño Blanco variety. This initiative aims to demonstrate the potential of indigenous varieties when given sufficient time and specialized viticulture, specifically utilizing the Niño Corvo plot in O Rosal.
