Spanish women directors call for funding and equality at Guanajuato Film Festival

At the 29th Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) in Mexico, Spanish filmmakers Lur Olaizola and Celia Viada (Viada Caso) highlighted persistent financial constraints facing independent Spanish cinema. Both noted that limited budgets impede the development of projects that deviate from commercial formats and that many young creators feel discouraged by the perception that filmmaking requires large sums.

The directors also pointed to gender disparities, saying women‑directed productions receive significantly fewer resources than those by male peers. They urged festivals and public institutions to guarantee fair payment for crew members and to provide more equitable support for female‑led projects. Olaizola emphasized the need for dignified compensation, while Viada expressed a desire for a production company to handle executive tasks, allowing her to focus on creative work.

Their remarks framed a broader call for stronger financing mechanisms and gender equality within the contemporary Spanish film sector.
