Spar overtakes Mercator as Slovenia's largest retailer

The Slovenian retail landscape has undergone a significant shift, with Austrian-based Spar overtaking Mercator as the country's largest retailer by total revenue. In 2025, Spar Slovenia reported 1.26 billion euros in business revenue, a 7.4 percent increase from the previous year, resulting in a net profit of 12.2 million euros.

In contrast, Mercator saw its sales revenue drop by 11.3 percent to approximately 1.17 billion euros. Despite this loss of market leadership, Mercator returned to profitability in 2025 with a net profit of 12.8 million euros, following a loss of 10.4 million euros the prior year. The company has been undergoing structural changes, including closing some retail outlets and separating its wholesale operations into a new entity, Mercator Cash & Carry.

Discount retailers also showed strong performance. Hofer, part of the German Aldi group, reversed a previous loss to report a net profit of 6.6 million euros on 702.4 million euros of revenue. Eurospin reported a 39.8 percent increase in net profit, reaching 11.3 million euros on revenues of nearly 324 million euros.
