Spar removes cage-raised eggs from self-operated stores
Spar has announced the complete removal of cage-raised eggs from its self-operated SPAR, City SPAR, and INTERSPAR stores. The retailer is replacing these products with eggs from alternative housing systems, including cage-free (deep litter), free-range, and organic options.
Deep litter eggs currently represent the largest portion of the new selection. The company noted that the transition was achieved through its existing supplier network, ensuring continuous availability for customers. Spar stated that it works exclusively with 100% Hungarian suppliers for its egg category, sourcing from local farms and stocks.
The shift follows changing consumer preferences toward higher animal welfare standards. Consumers can identify the housing system by the first digit on the eggshell code: 0 for organic, 1 for free-range, 2 for deep litter, and 3 for cage-raised.
