SPAR shopping complex in Calabar gutted by fire

A major fire broke out at the SPAR shopping complex on Barracks Road in Calabar, Cross River State, on Saturday morning. The blaze gutted several sections of the mall, including a pharmacy, clothing outlet, perfumery, and a phone shop.

Eyewitnesses reported thick black smoke and intense flames spreading from shop to shop, causing panic among traders, workers, and residents. While some witnesses expressed frustration regarding the emergency response time, firefighters and police personnel arrived at the scene to battle the inferno and manage crowds.

Government officials, including Raymond Anunobi, the State Environmental Director of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, and Ekpenyong Akiba, the Cross River State Governor’s Special Adviser on General Duties, visited the site to assess the damage. As of the latest reports, the cause of the fire has not been determined, and there has been no official confirmation regarding casualties or the total financial extent of the losses.
