Sparkasse Trier faces pressure from citizen initiative over interest rates
A citizen initiative in Trier, titled ‘Sparkasse Trier, aber anders’, is demanding higher interest rates and increased transparency from Sparkasse Trier. The group, co-founded by Simon Drobig, accuses the bank of ‘systematically disadvantaging’ its customers by offering uncompetitive rates on checking and call money accounts.
Drobig argues that as a public-law institution, the bank should prioritize the public good over its own profits. He suggests that the bank’s interest rates should align more closely with the European Central Bank’s key interest rate, which stands at 2.25 percent. The initiative is specifically campaigning for a 2 percent interest rate on checking accounts.
According to calculations provided by the initiative, the bank retains approximately 20 to 40 million euros in annual interest income that could otherwise be passed on to customers. While the bank defends its business policies, the initiative has turned to public campaigning, including posters in Trier, to voice its concerns regarding hidden costs and high account management fees.
