Sparkle and Hellas Sat launch quantum-safe satellite link

Sparkle and Hellas Sat have successfully established the first quantum-safe satellite connection between Greece and Cyprus. The link connects Sparkle’s data center in Athens with Hellas Sat’s infrastructure in Cyprus, covering a total distance of approximately 72,000 kilometers through the satellite uplink and downlink process.

The connection utilizes Sparkle’s Quantum Safe Interconnect (QSI) technology. This software-based solution is designed to protect sensitive data against “store now, decrypt later” attacks, where encrypted information is intercepted today to be decrypted by more powerful quantum computers in the future. The system achieves security through a quantum-safe distribution of cryptographic keys and automatic key rotation.

Because the QSI solution is software-based, it can be integrated into existing network and security infrastructures without requiring hardware replacements. The companies intend to offer these quantum-safe satellite services to corporate clients operating in remote, distributed, or mission-critical environments.
