SparkyLinux 8.4 restores 32-bit support for legacy hardware

SparkyLinux has released version 8.4, the fourth quarterly update to its Seven Sisters stable series. Built on the Debian 13 Trixie foundation, the update features refreshed kernels and desktop environments.

A primary highlight of this release is the restoration of 32-bit Live and installation images. SparkyLinux had previously discontinued these images approximately one year ago following Debian's decision to drop legacy support. The development team reversed this decision after determining that a significant number of users still possess functional computers with 32-bit processors.

The restored 32-bit offerings are designed to be lightweight, providing MinimalGUI editions using the Openbox window manager and MinimalCLI editions for text-based configuration. Notably, these 32-bit versions do not include the Calamares graphical installer; instead, users must perform installations via the command line using ‘sudo sparky-installer’.

Standard 64-bit editions remain available with various desktop environments, including KDE Plasma, Xfce, LXQt, and MATE. The release includes updated packages such as LibreOffice, Firefox ESR, and Thunderbird, alongside support for both BIOS and UEFI systems.
