Sparta to host 5th International Scientific Conference on ancient law and education

The 5th International Scientific Conference for Sparta is scheduled to take place in September 2026 at the University of Peloponnese. The event focuses on the legal and educational systems of ancient Sparta and their role in shaping citizens, including a comparative analysis with the educational methods of other ancient Greek cities.

Organized by the Institute of Sparta under the auspices of the Academy of Athens, the conference is held in collaboration with the Center for Research on the History of Greek Law. Co-organizers include Sapienza University of Rome, specifically its Department of Classical Studies and the Department of Law and Digital Society at Unitelma Sapienza.

The conference will feature 27 speakers across five sessions divided into three main themes: comparative approaches to Spartan upbringing, education in ancient Sparta, and the influences of the Spartan system on the modern world. Presentations will be conducted in Greek and English with simultaneous interpretation and a YouTube livestream. Proceedings will be published in the 5th volume of 'The Historical Review of Sparta' through L’Erma di Bretschneider.
