SPD and FDP seek reinstatement of Landtag prison commission

The SPD and FDP opposition parties have submitted a joint application to reinstate a specialized prison commission within the Landtag. The commission, which was abolished at the start of the current legislative period, is intended to serve as a control instrument for penal enforcement.

Proponents argue that recent judicial scandals and incidents in prisons highlight the need for such oversight. SPD MP Sonja Bongers described the previous abolition of the commission as a mistake, noting it would provide better scrutiny of both correctional facilities and the Minister of Justice. FDP MP Werner Pfeil added that the commission would allow the Landtag to monitor penal enforcement through practical, hands-on engagement rather than relying solely on official reports from the Ministry of Justice.

The proposed commission would operate as a subcommittee of the Legal Affairs Committee. Members would have the authority to conduct regular prison visits and investigate specific occurrences within the penal system. The Legal Affairs Committee is expected to vote on the matter next week.
