SPD backs two mayoral candidates in Meißner, Germany

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the Werra-Meißner district is supporting two candidates for the upcoming direct mayoral election in the municipality of Meißner, scheduled for 1 November. The candidates are Konstantinos Panou, nominated unanimously by the SPD local association, and Ralf Kruse, an independent who will run as a non‑party candidate with unanimous backing from the SPD local chapter in Germerode.

SPD officials say endorsing both candidates does not violate party statutes and reflects a “special form of democratic selection.” The party highlighted that the dual endorsement offers voters a broader choice, emphasizing that the candidates have complementary experience and political focuses. Panou, 25, and Kruse, 54, both view the support as an expression of vibrant local democracy.
