SPD demands women's safety program in North Rhine-Westphalia
The SPD is calling for a statewide women's safety program in North Rhine-Westphalia to address significant disparities in perceived security between genders. Lisa Kapteinat, Vice Chair of the SPD Landtag parliamentary group, emphasized that women should be more actively involved in the design of public spaces to address the specific conditions that trigger feelings of insecurity.
Data from a representative survey commissioned by the Federal Criminal Police Office highlights the issue. In 2024, only about 20 percent of women in North Rhine-Westphalia reported feeling safe at night on streets, paths, or squares, compared to 50 percent of men. This gap of more than 20 percentage points persists across various settings, including stations, public transport, and parks. Additionally, only 61 percent of women reported feeling safe in their own neighborhoods at night, while approximately 80 percent of men felt secure.
