The SPD Unterbezirk Bielefeld sent an open “Brandbrief” to the party’s federal chairs, Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil, demanding that they relinquish one of their dual positions. Both Bas and Klingbeil serve simultaneously as party co‑chairs and as federal ministers – Bas as Minister of Labour and Social Affairs and Klingbeil as Minister of Finance. The local branch argues that holding high‑level party and government offices at the same time is incompatible and erodes the party’s credibility.

Local party chief Markus Kollmeier is quoted saying, “Both roles cannot be exercised simultaneously; it does not meet the requirements of governmental responsibility nor the expectations of a strong, independent Social Democracy.” The letter also criticises recent policy decisions, citing the reform of the statutory health‑insurance system as an example of actions the party supported that the base views as politically and technically flawed. The Bielefeld branch calls for a clear separation of party leadership and ministerial duties to restore trust in the SPD.
