SPD leadership faces calls for removal amid internal party unrest

Internal tensions are rising within Germany’s SPD as party members call for the removal of leadership figures Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil. Despite securing significant concessions in negotiations with Chancellor Friedrich Merz—including billions in new debt, pension increases, and expanded collective bargaining loyalty—the party leadership faces growing criticism from its own base.

Juso leader Philipp Türmer has warned of a potential “basis uprising” or “revolution” to protect the “social democratic soul.” Local officials and various internal factions, such as the “Forum Demokratische Linke” and the “Migration and Diversity in the SPD” working group, have expressed dissatisfaction. Some groups are even calling for a special party convention this autumn to vote the current leaders out.

This internal unrest coincides with a busy political autumn in Germany, which includes state elections in eastern states like Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg, as well as various federal party congresses.
