SPD official Armand Zorn opposes expanded flight rights for Emirates
Armand Zorn, the deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, has expressed opposition to expanding the flight rights of Emirates at German airports. Zorn cautioned that additional market access must be carefully evaluated to ensure fair competition and to prevent the loss of value and traffic from German aviation hubs to other regions.
These remarks come ahead of a state visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, who is scheduled to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin. While the German government had previously indicated openness to Emirates operating at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) in February, the airline Lufthansa has actively rejected granting further licenses to the Gulf-based carrier.
Zorn emphasized that maintaining a competitive aviation location in Germany requires fair competition, including adherence to collective bargaining agreements and employee rights, to ensure domestic companies are not disadvantaged in the international market.
