SPD proposes forest fire medal for firefighters

The SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany) is proposing a special medal to honor firefighters for their efforts in combating forest fires. SPD parliamentary manager Dirk Wiese stated that firefighters, often working on a volunteer basis, risk their lives to protect people and property during disasters.

Wiese suggested that while federal-level civil protection is being strengthened, a concrete award like a forest fire medal would provide necessary recognition for the selfless work performed during severe wildfire catastrophes. He pointed to Brandenburg, Saxony, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as states that have already implemented such awards. In 2022, the Saxon State Chancellery minted approximately 8,800 medals following significant fires, a program so successful it required a second edition.

The proposal comes amid increasing global risks of wildfire weather, which experts link to global warming and the continued burning of fossil fuels.
