Bond markets face volatility as US yields hit 2002 highs and French debt under pressure

Global financial markets are experiencing significant volatility, driven by rising bond yields and fiscal concerns in Europe. In France, a major sell-off in sovereign debt has caused the OAT-Bund spread to exceed 140 basis points. Notably, markets now perceive French corporate bonds as less risky than French sovereign debt, a shift that reflects growing anxiety over the nation's public finances and budget deficits.

In the United States, 10-year Treasury yields have reached levels not seen since 2002, climbing to 5.72%. Recent Federal Reserve meeting minutes revealed that all 19 officials supported the September interest rate hike to combat inflation risks. This hawkish stance, combined with high energy prices, is putting downward pressure on global equity markets, including the DAX.

In Turkey, Commerzbank analysts anticipate a 100 basis point interest rate cut by the Turkish Central Bank during its October 22 meeting, following lower-than-expected inflation data. Meanwhile, in the banking sector, Crédit Agricole has announced plans to expand its presence in Germany, targeting the private consumer market with new products starting in late October, as part of a broader goal to become a full-service bank in the region by 2027.
