Mecklenburg-Vorpommern SPD begins exploratory talks with Greens and Linke

Following the state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the SPD has unanimously decided to begin exploratory talks with the Greens and Die Linke to form a government. While the AfD emerged as the strongest force with 38.2 percent of the vote, it lacks a potential coalition partner. The SPD secured 35.5 percent, and a coalition between the SPD, Linke, and Greens would provide a parliamentary majority with 39 of the 71 seats.

In the newly formed state parliament, leadership roles have been established: Enrico Schult will lead the AfD faction, Julian Barlen continues as head of the SPD faction, and Hennis Herbst will lead the Linke faction. Claudia Müller is currently serving as the interim leader for the Greens.

Henriette Held, chair of the Green Youth, has called for specific campaign promises to be included in any potential coalition agreement. Her demands include climate neutrality by 2035, free public transport for individuals under 27, and a 1,500 euro non-repayable bonus for apprentices who remain in the state.
