Speaker Bagbin emphasizes importance of strong parliamentary committees
Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has underscored the necessity of robust and effective parliamentary committees for democratic governance. Speaking at the Annual Parliamentary Committees Leadership Programme 2026, Bagbin stated that the strength of a parliament is defined by the quality of committee work rather than just the volume of debates or laws passed.
He noted that committees are essential for examining proposed legislation, scrutinizing public spending, and holding government institutions accountable. Bagbin also highlighted that committees serve as a vital platform for citizens, civil society, and professional bodies to contribute to the legislative process.
Warning against the rushed passage of legislation, the Speaker revealed that Parliament has previously been forced to recall approximately four draft bills for further consideration after they had already been passed. He cautioned lawmakers that poor legislation could damage the reputation of Parliament and that members would ultimately be held responsible by their constituents for the laws they enact.
