Speaker Jo Jeong-sik meets U.S. Ambassador Michelle Steel

South Korean National Assembly Speaker Jo Jeong-sik met with U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel on August 21 to discuss strengthening the ROK-U.S. alliance and enhancing cooperation between the two nations' legislatures.

During the meeting, Speaker Jo expressed support for President Trump’s determination to initiate dialogue and establish a stable peace system on the Korean Peninsula. He proposed the creation of a counterpart to the Korea-U.S. Parliamentary Union within the U.S. Congress to facilitate better communication and exchange between lawmakers.

Ambassador Steel, a former U.S. Representative, noted her understanding of the critical role legislatures play in foreign policy and expressed her willingness to assist in deepening bilateral relations through parliamentary engagement. Speaker Jo also presented Ambassador Steel with a plaque of appreciation, acknowledging the historical contribution of the U.S. Embassy in donating 700 books to the National Assembly during the Korean War, which helped lay the foundation for the National Assembly Library.
