Speaker Milton Dick launches nationwide civics education push
Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Milton Dick is leading a campaign to strengthen civics education across the country. He plans to visit schools in all 150 federal electorates, targeting consistent civics curricula in years 6 and 10 so that every student understands how governments are formed, courts operate, elections are run and independent institutions function.
Dick highlighted a decline in student performance, noting that only 28 % of year‑10 students met the national proficiency standard in 2024, down from 38 % in 2019, according to the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority. He argues that improving civic knowledge is essential to protect Australian democracy amid misinformation, social media influence and global instability.
