Special constable dismissed for failing to pay for carrier bags
Luke Hodgson, a volunteer special constable with the West Mercia Police, has been dismissed from both his police duties and his role at Sainsbury’s after failing to pay for carrier bags on three separate occasions. The incidents, which occurred over a twelve-day period in December 2025, involved a total sum of £1.20.
West Mercia Chief Constable Richard Cooper ruled that Hodgson’s actions constituted an “abuse of trust” and a violation of the standards of honesty and integrity expected of police officers. Although Hodgson claimed he had forgotten to pay, the investigation concluded that he was aware payment was required and “chose not to offer such payment.”
As a result of the misconduct ruling, Hodgson has been placed on the College of Policing’s barred list, which prevents him from serving as a police officer in the future. While the financial loss to Sainsbury’s was minimal, officials emphasized that the behavior undermined public confidence in the police service.
