Special Olympics Canada Summer Games 2026 sees record Yukon, BC delegations
Yukon’s Special Olympics program sent its largest ever team – 37 athletes – to the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alberta, scheduled for Aug. 11‑15. Chef de mission Emma Hill highlighted the historic size of the delegation and noted athletes such as veteran track star Darby McIntyre, newcomer swimmers Sara‑Lee Edmonds and Chris Wagner, and powerlifter Brandle Bruneau. The team also featured a seasoned bocce squad and a soccer group that recently earned a bronze medal at the provincial games.
From British Columbia, the Port Alberni Valley is fielding 20 athletes and coaches across track and field, golf, swimming and slopitch softball. The slopitch team, which won provincial gold last year, includes a mix of local players and recent pickups. Notably, this is the first time a golfer from the Alberni Valley will compete at the national level. All participants join more than 1,700 athletes, coaches and volunteers converging on Medicine Hat for the ten‑sport event, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games.
