Special Olympics Regional Games conclude in Cairo

The 10th Special Olympics Regional Games for the Middle East and North Africa, held in Cairo, Egypt, from September 17 to 23, 2026, have concluded. Under the theme ‘Performance Sports,’ the event brought together 13 regional programs to promote inclusion and athletic development.

Participating delegations praised the organization and hospitality provided by the Egyptian organizing committee. Ayman Abdel Wahab, Regional President of Special Olympics International for the Middle East and North Africa, met with delegations during the closing ceremony to congratulate participants on their achievements. This marks the third time Egypt has hosted the games, following previous editions in 1999 and 2014.

The Saudi Arabian delegation achieved significant success, securing 24 medals. Notable performances included Yara Al-Ashari, who earned five silver medals in artistic gymnastics, and Hassan Al-Hadrati, who won gold in the deadlift. Other Saudi medalists included Ahmed Majali, Azhar Al-Sinan, Aida Aziz, Muhannad Al-Mudara, Omar Al-Ali, and Sara Al-Wadhani, competing in disciplines such as powerlifting and equestrianism.
