Special Prosecutor selects 10 candidates for election investigation assistants

Special Prosecutor Lee Tae-han, investigating the June 3 local election ballot shortage and other irregularities, has narrowed down 10 candidates for the position of special prosecutor assistant. The selection was made by combining existing lists with candidates provided by the Korean Bar Association.

The investigation team will spend one to two days verifying the candidates' qualifications before submitting the final list to the Presidential Office. According to the Special Prosecutor, selection criteria prioritized digital forensic and investigative capabilities, alongside political neutrality and objectivity. Once appointed, the five assistants will hold status equivalent to chief prosecutors.

The investigation is expected to begin in earnest early next month. The team is currently securing personnel, including requests for special investigators from the Seoul Bar Association and the dispatch of staff from the prosecution and police. The scope of the investigation includes 12 key areas, such as allegations of voter rights infringement due to ballot shortages, suspicious overseas trips by former National Election Commission officials, and potential manipulation of election statistics.
