Special State Prosecutor reports on war crimes investigations

A report on the implementation of the 2024-2027 War Crimes Investigation Strategy reveals that the only new war crimes case opened by the Special State Prosecutor (SDT) in the first half of 2026 was closed due to the dismissal of the criminal complaint.

Regarding ongoing investigations, 22 cases remain in the inquiry phase, one is in the investigation phase, and one has an indicted charge. The SDT has continued work on the ‘Morinj’ and ‘Kaluđerski laz’ cases, with certain actions delegated to prosecutors within the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office.

In terms of international legal assistance, the SDT sent a request to the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office in Serbia, which remained unanswered by the end of the reporting period. Additionally, two requests sent to Croatian judicial authorities regarding witness testimony and evidence delivery were subject to urgent follow-ups in late 2025. The SDT also received six requests for assistance from authorities in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, responding to all of them during the period. The office continues to exchange information and collect evidence from the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.
