Specsavers identifies hearing-friendly restaurants to combat social isolation

A study by Specsavers involving over one thousand people in the Netherlands highlights the social impact of hearing loss. The research indicates that one-third of individuals with hearing loss dine out less frequently than they desire, and nearly half feel their social lives have shrunk as a result.

To address this issue and raise awareness during the Week Against Loneliness, Specsavers partnered with the restaurant guide Lekker500 to identify hearing-friendly dining establishments. A jury evaluated ten restaurants based on acoustics, noise levels, layout, and hospitality. The restaurant ‘Aan de Poel’ received a high score of 5 out of 6 for its hearing-friendliness, with reviewers noting that its spacious table arrangements and use of soft furnishings like upholstered chairs and carpets significantly improved acoustics.

Experts warn that the consequences of hearing loss extend beyond difficulty hearing conversations. It can lead to increased fatigue after social gatherings, avoidance of concerts or theater, and a tendency to withdraw from social events like birthdays. This phenomenon, described as a ‘fade-out,’ can contribute to frustration, loneliness, and depression.
