Speech-language pathologists needed in Swedish healthcare teams

There is a growing call for increased integration of speech-language pathologists into rehabilitation and primary care teams in Sweden. While these professionals are essential for assessing congenital communication disabilities in children and managing acquired brain injuries in adults, they are currently often restricted to specialized hospital clinics.

National guidelines established by Socialstyrelsen in 2018 for stroke care emphasize two high-priority measures for patients with aphasia: access to intensive linguistic training and communication partner training for relatives. However, reports indicate these guidelines have been implemented insufficiently. Current practice often results in sparse training sessions and minimal support for families, which can lead to social isolation and mental health issues for both patients and their relatives.
