Speedy Tigers lose 4-7 to Ireland in Hockey World Cup classification

The Malaysian men's national hockey team, known as the Speedy Tigers, lost 4-7 to Ireland in a 2026 Hockey World Cup classification match at the Belfius Hockey Arena. Ireland, ranked 10th in the world, established an early lead with Jonathan Lynch scoring a hat-trick and Matthew Nelson adding a goal to make it 4-0 in the first half.

Malaysia attempted a comeback in the second half with goals from Azimuddin Syakir, Amirul Hamizan, Azrai Aizad, and Faizal Saari. Despite the scoring effort, defensive lapses allowed Ireland to maintain control.

Head coach Brendan Carolan expressed disappointment regarding the team's defensive performance and the ease with which goals were conceded early in the match. He noted that the result highlights the gap between Malaysia and top-10 world-ranked opponents. The team now prepares for a classification match against South Africa to compete for 9th through 16th place.
