Speers Point Garage eyed for restaurant conversion

A development application has been submitted to Lake Macquarie City Council to transform the historic Speers Point Garage into a restaurant and cafe. The heritage-listed former Shell service station, originally built in 1926, has sat derelict for decades.

The proposal, submitted by NGA Business and SWA Business, aims to restore the iconic building and convert it into a 260-square-metre food and drink premises. The plan intends to preserve the building’s distinctive architectural features, including its arched front and sunburst-patterned facade, while addressing the current state of disrepair.

Following its 70-year period of operation, the site was sold at auction for $368,000 and was subsequently used for vehicle storage. The applicants stated that repurposing the building is the most effective way to fund the ongoing maintenance required to preserve its legacy.
