Spello and Palmoli showcase art and history in Italy's medieval heart

Spello, a town in Umbria perched on the slopes of Monte Subasio, offers visitors historic monuments such as the Roman Porta Consolare, Porta Veneree, the medieval walls, and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore with frescoes attributed to Pinturicchio. Its location on the ancient Via Flaminia links it to centuries of Roman and medieval trade, and the surrounding countryside provides walking routes to sites like the ancient aqueduct and the nearby village of Collepino.

In Abruzzo, the medieval village of Palmoli has been transformed by contemporary art installations placed in its narrow streets. Photographer Sabrina Masciulli documented works that integrate light, colour and sculptural forms with the stone architecture, creating a dialogue between tradition and modern creativity. Both towns illustrate how Italy’s historic centres combine cultural heritage with present‑day artistic expression to attract tourists.
