Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Accused of Election Law Violations by Challenger Spencer Pratt

Mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt filed a formal complaint with the Los Angeles City Clerk alleging that incumbent Mayor Karen Bass violated city election law by campaigning within 100 feet of a ballot drop box during early voting. Pratt’s filing claims Bass solicited votes, displayed campaign signs and personally placed her ballot in the box, actions prohibited under Article B, Section 815 of the Los Angeles Election Code. He posted on X, saying “Karen Bass just violated election law here. She is so accustomed to breaking the law with no accountability…”. The complaint was also sent to the city attorney and state officials.

Bass’s campaign denied any wrongdoing, stating the video was shot at two separate locations—one more than 200 feet from the drop box and the other without signs— and asserted that they “follow the rules”. Legal experts note that a finding of intentional violation could result in fines, misdemeanor charges, or even jail time, though no charges have been filed yet.

The dispute comes as the June 2, 2026 primary approaches. Polls show Bass leading with roughly 25‑30 % support, Pratt at about 22 %, and third‑place candidate Nithya Raman near 18‑19 %. The race has attracted high‑profile endorsements, including former President Donald Trump and actor Dennis Quaid, further elevating its visibility.
