Sperm whale research confirms ability to sink large vessels

New scientific research has confirmed a historical theory regarding the destructive power of sperm whales, validating accounts from the 19th century that these animals can sink vessels many times their own size.

The findings relate to the 1820 shipwreck of the Essex, an event that inspired Herman Melville’s novel “Moby Dick”. Survivors, including a young Thomas Nickerson, reported that whales struck the ship with enough force to cause catastrophic damage and eventual sinking.

Researchers have identified that the sperm whale's power stems from its massive head, which accounts for approximately one-third of its total body length. The head contains a unique organ filled with spermaceti, a fatty substance that was highly sought after by whalers for fuel and manufacturing. The species also possesses the largest brain of any animal on Earth, weighing up to 9 kilograms.
