Sperm whale strandings reported in Australia and Massachusetts
A juvenile sperm whale, weighing approximately 13 tonnes and measuring over 10 metres, has died after beaching at Turners Beach on the North-West Coast of Tasmania. Authorities believe the animal, estimated to be five or six years old, may have been suffering from injury or illness. A specialist wildlife veterinarian is conducting examinations to determine the exact cause of death, and officials have advised the public to stay away from the carcass due to disease risks.
In a separate incident, an endangered sperm whale was reported stranded on the South Shore of Massachusetts. The sighting was reported by a resident to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) marine animal rescue hotline.
