Spetses: Newborn monk seal rescued after wandering alone
A newborn Mediterranean monk seal, named ‘Alexis’, has been rescued on the island of Spetses after wandering alone for three consecutive days in search of its mother. The pup was spotted moving between beaches amidst heavy summer tourist crowds on the western coast of the island.
Following a rescue operation involving the Spetses Port Authority, a local veterinarian, and volunteers, the seal was transported to the MOm Care Center. Initial veterinary examinations revealed that the pup is dehydrated and has a low body weight. However, specialists noted that its overall health condition is not critically severe, providing optimism for its recovery. Intensive care has begun with the ultimate goal of rehabilitating the seal so it can eventually be returned to its natural habitat.
