Speyer commemorates 20th anniversary of Paul Josef Nardini's beatification

The Diocese of Speyer marks the 20th anniversary of the beatification of Paul Josef Nardini, which took place on October 22, 2006, in Speyer Cathedral. Nardini, a priest and founder of the Poor Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family (now known as the Mallersdorfer Sisters), was the first priest from the Diocese of Speyer and the first person from the Palatinate region to receive this ecclesiastical honor.

The original ceremony was led by Cardinal Friedrich Wetter on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. During the service, the Apostolic Letter was read, permitting the public veneration of Nardini and establishing his feast day on January 27, the anniversary of his death. The event drew approximately 2,000 worshippers into the cathedral and an additional 6,000 spectators who watched via large screens in the cathedral garden.

Born in Germersheim in 1821, Nardini overcame a difficult childhood to dedicate his life to social service. After serving in Frankenthal and Geinsheim, he became a pastor in Pirmasens, where he founded a religious community to care for the poor, the sick, and neglected children. His legacy of social engagement continues through the work of his religious order and the Caritas Nardini Prize, which honors volunteer groups assisting those in need.
