Speyer Kurpfalz-Kaserne to return to military use

The former Kurpfalz-Kaserne in Speyer is set to return to military use following a multi-party agreement between the federal government, the state, the city, and the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BImA).

The Bundeswehr plans to establish a forward command in Speyer starting April 1, 2027, with training under the new military service scheduled to begin on October 1, 2027. The long-term goal is the full military utilization of the site.

To manage the transition, the parties will develop a binding schedule and a joint space-use regulation to ensure that buildings currently used by the city are not vacated abruptly. Speyer's Mayor, Stefanie Seiler, stated that the city supports the Bundeswehr's return while ensuring local interests are represented through an orderly transition. Additionally, the federal government confirmed there is no military requirement for the Polygon site, allowing for continued discussions regarding its civilian development.
