Spiš Diocese celebrates 250th anniversary with papal legate

Cardinal Mario Grech, acting as a special papal legate, presided over a solemn Mass at St. Martin's Cathedral in Spišská Kapitula to mark the 250th anniversary of the canonical establishment of the Spiš Diocese.

The celebration follows a papal bull from Pope Leo XIV, which appointed Cardinal Grech as the special envoy for the jubilee. The diocese was originally established by Pope Pius VI in 1776 through the bull 'Romanus Pontifex' to serve the spiritual needs of the region.

Bishop František Trstenský described the presence of the papal legate as a sign of the Holy Father's closeness to the diocese. The anniversary marks the culmination of a jubilee year dedicated to prayer, thanksgiving, and pastoral reflection.
