SpiceJet faces operational crisis amid high flight cancellations

Recent operational statistics from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reveal significant disruptions for SpiceJet. In August 2026, the airline cancelled 20.92% of its scheduled flights, compared to an industry-wide cancellation rate of 1.04%. This trend continued into September, with a cancellation rate of 20.29% against an industry average of 1.15%.

On-time performance at ten major airports was reported at only 16.6% for SpiceJet, significantly lower than competitors such as IndiGo (91.1%), Akasa Air (90.8%), and the Air India Group (81.7%). Consequently, SpiceJet’s domestic passenger market share has declined, falling from 1.2% in August to approximately 0.6% in September.
