SpiceJet market share falls below Star Air in India
SpiceJet's share of the Indian domestic aviation market fell to 0.6 per cent in September, dropping below regional carrier Star Air's 0.7 per cent share for the first time, according to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data.
The airline's passenger numbers saw a significant decline, carrying 7.3 lakh passengers in September compared to 59.2 lakh in January. This decline is attributed to ongoing financial pressures and operational issues that have kept portions of its fleet grounded.
Overall, India's domestic passenger traffic for January through September fell 0.82 per cent year-on-year. The broader aviation sector faced challenges including high airfares driven by increased fuel costs and rupee depreciation.
