Spider-Man: Brand New Day sparks character controversy and fitness interest
The release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has sparked significant discussion regarding both the film's character dynamics and lead actor Tom Holland's physical transformation.
Controversy has emerged surrounding a character identified in US subtitles as ‘Paul’, MJ’s new boyfriend. In Marvel comic lore, the character Paul is a polarizing figure associated with the separation of Peter Parker and MJ. Actor Eman Esfandi has clarified on social media that he is not playing the character ‘Paul’, noting that the name likely stemmed from a subtitling error.
Separately, Tom Holland’s physical evolution for the role has drawn attention from the fitness community. Moving away from a teenage physique, Holland has adopted an ‘athletic superhero’ training regimen designed by coach Duffy Gaver. Rather than traditional bodybuilding, his ‘monster workout’ focuses on functional strength, endurance, and body control through high-repetition pyramid sets of pull-ups, dips, push-ups, sit-ups, and air squats.
