Spies marks 70 years of charter travel evolution

To mark its 70th anniversary, travel agency Spies has released data comparing the cost of charter holidays in 1956 to modern prices. The findings show that charter travel has transitioned from a luxury good to a common commodity.

In 1956, a four-week trip to Mallorca cost 995 kroner, which was nearly equivalent to an average monthly salary at the time. Adjusted for modern purchasing power, that amount would be approximately 20,000 kroner. Furthermore, travelers in the 1950s had to work roughly six weeks to afford a four-week holiday, often traveling via train and ferry for over a day.

Today, a similar four-week trip to Mallorca costs approximately 10,000 kroner per person. For the average Danish worker, this represents about 42 to 45 working hours, meaning a person can earn enough for the holiday in just over one week of work. Modern travel is also significantly faster, with Sunclass Airlines providing direct flights to Mallorca in just a few hours.
