Spin Time activists organize protests following Rome eviction

Activists and residents are mobilizing in Rome following the eviction of Spin Time, a long-standing social and cultural center located in the Esquilino district. The eviction occurred after a small fire on July 29 prompted an intervention by firefighters and police, leading to the removal of approximately 400 people, including many families who had been using the space since 2013.

Activists have labeled the eviction “illecito” (unlawful) and are calling for the building to be returned to public use. Proposed solutions include a public acquisition of the property or expropriation to prevent it from being subject to real estate speculation by private entities like Investire SGR. The movement seeks to establish an alternative urban development model for central Rome that prioritizes social reproduction and community services over short-term rentals and hotels.

A national protest march is scheduled for September 19 in Rome, followed by a public assembly the next day. The demonstration is expected to move from the building’s gates in Via Santa Croce in Gerusalemme to the headquarters of the property owner on Via Po. The situation presents a political challenge for the Rome municipal government (Campidoglio) regarding urban strategy and the management of social spaces.
