Spin Time social center in Rome faces uncertain future after fire

The future of Spin Time, a large-scale social and cultural center in Rome, remains uncertain following a fire in July. The facility, which occupies 21,000 square meters in the Esquilino district, serves as a residence and community hub for approximately 130 families from 27 different countries, including young people, the impoverished, and migrants.

Since its occupation by the Action movement in 2013, the former pension institute building has functioned as a self-managed community featuring residential floors, workshops, a cinema, and coworking spaces. However, the site has been a point of intense political contention. While Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has expressed interest in preserving the center by purchasing the building, negotiations with the owner, Investire SGR, have not yet succeeded.

The center faces strong opposition from the national government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which views the site as an illegal occupation. The displacement of roughly 400 residents following the fire has turned the center's survival into a significant local political debate regarding urban gentrification and the right to housing.
