Spinal health: Managing back pain through posture and exercise
Maintaining spinal health involves both proper sleeping postures and regular physical activity. Experts suggest that sleeping positions can significantly impact spinal pressure and muscle tension. While supine (lying on the back) is generally considered the best option for most people, side-sleeping with a pillow between the knees can help maintain pelvic and lumbar neutrality. Conversely, prone (stomach) sleeping is discouraged as it can cause spinal misalignment. Specific conditions may require adjustments, such as heart failure patients sleeping with their heads slightly elevated.
In addition to posture, targeted exercise can alleviate lower back pain. A study published in the journal ‘Spine’ found that patients with neuropathic pain from lumbar disc herniation experienced significant improvement after 12 weeks of yoga involving stretching and strength training. Recommended movements for spinal mobility include the ‘Open Book’ stretch, ‘Child’s Pose to Cat’, and various seated twists. However, individuals with existing conditions like sciatica or disc herniation should consult medical professionals before attempting intense stretching routines.
