Spirit Energy completes £40 million North Sea decommissioning campaign

Spirit Energy has completed a £40 million decommissioning campaign in the UK Southern North Sea. The operation, conducted between April and July 2026, focused on the plug and abandonment of three subsea wells: the Seven Seas and Grove G5 production wells, and the Grove Deep exploration well.

The project involved the removal of over 234 tonnes of subsea infrastructure. Spirit Energy stated that all recovered materials are intended for 100 per cent recycling or reuse at UK processing facilities. The undertaking required more than 114,000 hours of work and utilized over 30 UK supply chain partners.

Key collaborators included DeepOcean, which provided the construction support vessel Edda Freya, and Well-Safe Solutions. At the Seven Seas field, located approximately 60km off the East Yorkshire coast, teams recovered a 100-tonne Wellhead Protection Structure. At the Grove G5 area, 131km east of the Norfolk coast, remotely operated vehicles were used to disconnect infrastructure in preparation for well abandonment.
