Spirulina cultivation shows potential as a bioactive Vitamin B12 source
New research suggests that Spirulina, when cultivated in closed photobioreactors using controlled LED lighting, can produce biologically active Vitamin B12. Unlike many commercial Spirulina products that contain pseudo-B12—a molecule that is not reliably useful for humans—this specific cultivation method resulted in samples where over 98% of the measured vitamin was the active form. The study found approximately 1.64 micrograms of useful B12 per 100 grams of biomass, a concentration comparable to or slightly higher than certain cuts of beef.
Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and the maintenance of the nervous system through myelin sheath formation. While naturally abundant in animal products like beef liver, clams, and salmon, deficiency is a concern for specific populations, including the elderly, vegetarians, vegans, and individuals with gastrointestinal disorders. Recommended daily intakes range from 2.4 micrograms for adults to 2.8 micrograms for those breastfeeding.
